What Does My Heart Need Right Now?
We ask what needs to be finished before the end of the week. We ask what time we should leave the house. We ask whether we remembered to answer an email. Entire days pass without ever wondering how we are doing beneath the surface.
I realized this one afternoon while sitting in a coffee shop.
Every table seemed occupied by someone trying to get somewhere else. I remember looking around and wondering how many people are just busy bodies.
Life rewards movement. There is always another goal to pursue, another problem asking for attention. While your inner life could care less.
We can ignore ourselves for weeks, sometimes months. But the heart never stops and many of us wait until there is a health concern related to your heart until we pay attention to it.
Our heart changes the way we experience the world. Broken hearts afraid to love. Wounded hearts create walls with no door in sight for someone to enter.
The heart also keeps a different measure of time.
It holds grief long after everyone else assumes we have moved on. It recognizes joy before the mind has found words for it.
We live in a world that celebrates the mind and steps on the heart.
So I ask of you today.
"What does your heart need right now?"
